Sonoma and Patzcuaro have been Sister Cities for almost twenty years. As a Sister City, we have endeavored to promote communication and exchanges. At the present time, we are hampered with exchanges due to the problems that Mexicans face with procuring visas to the United States.
In the past, Sonoma has donated a fire truck and supplies to Patzcuaro’s fire department. Recently, visitors from Sonoma have contributed their time and money to Patzcuaro’s Senior Food Program, the Animal Spay Project and the Casa Hogar, a residential program to help local boys stay in school.
We also have worked to let senior students at Sonoma Valley High School know that we are available to work with them on their senior projects. In the past, students have raised money to send to the Casa Hogar.
We are working to establish a relationship with Sonoma’s Hispanic community through our connections with La Luz and Sonoma’s Community Health Center. We feel that being connected to our local Hispanic community embodies the essence of the Sister City program which is people to people communication. |
